  • First, make sure you apply to the University of Utah. You’ll need to be accepted to both the U and your BFA program in order to enroll in the required courses.

    We strongly recommend that you apply to the U by December 1. Students who apply to the University of Utah by December 1 are eligible for exceptional benefits, including the following:

    • automatic consideration for all university merit-based scholarships

    • automatic consideration for the For Utah scholarship if you submit your FAFSA by February 1 (UT residents only)

    • discounted tuition for non-resident students from participating states and territories through the Western Undergraduate Exchange

  • In the next step, we’ll provide a short list of application materials we need from you. If you are auditioning for the ATP or MTP, we’ll also give you the guidelines and requirements for your audition.

    Please note: you’l be asked to submit your application materials when you schedule your audition or interview.. Make sure you have them prepared before moving on to the next step.

  • Once your application materials are prepared, you can schedule your audition or interview.

    • ATP & MTP Applicants: Before scheduling your audition, you will need to register and pay your $30 audition fee.* Once we have processed your payment, you’ll receive an access code for our scheduling system.

    • PADP, SM, & TT applicants: proceed directly to scheduling.

    *Audition fees are non-refundable. You can request a fee waiver for any reason by emailing us at recruitment@theatre.utah.edu. Although we rely on audition fees to subsidize recruitment costs, we don’t want fees to be an obstacle for any student who wishes to audition.

  • After you complete your audition or interview, watch your inbox for notifications from the university and the Department of Theatre. Read them carefully, since they’ll contain instructions for confirming enrollment and declaring your major.

    Remember, you can only declare a major in a BFA program if you’ve been accepted to both the university and your desired BFA program. Until you declare your major, you will not be able to enroll in courses for that program.

  • A current resume with contact information, including current phone number, email, and physical mailing address

    A one- to two-page letter of purpose addressing the following questions:

    • Why do you want a BFA in Stage Management from the University of Utah

    • What do you think makes a great stage manager?

    An online portfolio or PDF sample of work including one or more of the following:

    • Stage Management Work Examples (Rehearsal or Performance Notes or Reports, Staging Notation, Calling Script, etc.)

    • Theatrical Work Examples (Design Renderings, Photographs, Technical Drawings, etc.)

    • Creative or Professional Writing Examples (Formal Essay, Research Paper, Short Story, Speech, Professional Emails, etc.)

Step 3: Schedule Your Interview

After you’ve prepared your materials, schedule your interview and submit your materials at the following link:

    • University of Utah admission notifications begin on January 1 for students who apply before the December 1 deadline.

    • Actor Training and Musical Theatre acceptance letters will be sent out in early March.

    • These notifications contain important information about confirming your enrollment and declaring your major. These are crucial final steps you must take if you plan to enroll as a BFA program student at the U.

    If you will be attending as a non-resident and live in a WICHE state or territory (see link below), we strongly recommend that you look into the Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE). Qualifying non-residents can receive significant tuition discounts when attending the University of Utah.

  • If you are accepted to the University of Utah, you must confirm your intent to enroll by May 1. This also applies to our BFA programs.

    • If you do not confirm your enrollment with the U in a timely fashion, you may lose access to housing assignments and financial aid offers.

    • If you are accepted to a BFA program and fail to confirm your enrollment with the Department of Theatre, we may not be able to hold your place in your BFA program.

  • Once you are accepted to the university and your BFA program, declare your major by meeting with a College of Fine Arts (CFA) Academic Advisor.
